The shelters below are first stage, or emergency shelters, for folks leaving a family violence situation in Edmonton and the surrounding area. The typical length of stay at these shelters is three weeks.

Located in Morinville. Provides emergency shelter to folks of all genders.
Second Stage Shelters
Second-stage shelters provide longer-term, safe, affordable, supportive, and independent housing and some services similar to those provided in emergency shelters/transition houses. Women and their children can usually stay at a second stage shelter for 6 months to two years in independent, furnished units. Rent is geared to your income and there are generally no costs for the programs offered by the second stage house. (Source: ShelterSafe)
Located in Edmonton. La Salle is a second-stage shelter for women and their children, who have left abuse and are transitioning from a first-stage shelter into longer-term, safe housing.
Located in Edmonton. WINGS offers a second-stage shelter and affordable housing for women with children who have experienced family violence.
Supportive/Transitional Housing
Located in Edmonton. Nisa is a safe residence for you and your children to go to if you are in an unsafe home environment, in an abusive relationship, homeless or at risk of homelessness or simply in need of a place of safety.
Located in Edmonton. Supportive apartment style housing for women who are seeking safe and affordable housing.
Temporary Shelters
Description
Located in Edmonton. The Herb Jamieson Centre offers short-term and emergency room and board to men with little or no resources.
Located in Edmonton. The Salvation Army helps men, women, families and children experiencing or at risk of homelessness with an emphasis on supporting those experiencing long-term homelessness and facing housing exclusion.
Emergency/Homeless Shelters
Description
Located in Edmonton. YESS serves youth ages 15-21 in our shelter and residence programs, and youth ages 15-24 in our daytime programs.
Located in Edmonton. Emergency shelter for women experiencing homelessness or struggle with housing.
Located in Edmonton. Hope Mission provides emergency shelter for those who need a safe, dry, warm place to get a good night’s sleep.
Located in Edmonton. Medical Detox and shelter is a 35-bed unit located at the George Spady Centre in Edmonton’s downtown core. Stays are 3-15 days and include meals and laundry at no cost.
Housing
Focus on providing affordable housing for people in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. They manage more than 4,500 social housing rental units and over 600 near-market housing rental units.

Provides outreach services to Strathcona County & Sherwood Park residents.
Provides outreach services to Sturgeon County, Morinville & St. Albert residents.
Located in Edmonton. Provides outreach services to members of the Chinese community.
Located in Edmonton. EJHS offers free service to assist their clients in reducing barriers and providing a safe and supportive environment to make informed choices.
Ending Tenancy
Tenants can end their tenancy agreement without financial penalty by getting a certificate confirming they're victims of domestic violence.
Elder Abuse Resources
Awareness, prevention & a coordinated response to Elder Abuse (ages 50+).
The Seniors Safe House is for seniors over 60 who are leaving abusive situations.
Financial Needs & Literacy
An online questionnaire that can provide information on financial supports in Edmonton/Alberta that you may be eligible for based on your answers.
Educates Albertans in personal money management and the wise use of credit, and provides alternatives for families and individuals facing financial crisis.
A financial empowerment program that helps participants increase their knowledge, tools and access to resources to meet their financial goals. It combines financial education, one-on-one financial coaching and matched savings.
A rapid response intervention to stop an eviction, disconnection or foreclosure. It is a one-time assistance program to be used as a last resort once all other options have been explored.
Can be applied for through Alberta Supports. You may get help with expenses and other supports to get to safety and/or start a new life.
If you are facing an unexpected emergency, you can apply for emergency financial assistance through Alberta Supports.
Can help you access more than 30 programs and 120 services for seniors, people with disabilities, job seekers, parents and families, homelessness, financial assistance, abuse, and family violence prevention.
Pets
The Pet Safekeeping Program is dedicated to helping victims of family violence leave abusive situations by providing temporary care for their pets. You may require a referral from a domestic violence agency. The program can also assist with safety planning, crisis intervention, and referrals.

If you live in Edmonton, and have concerns about someone intentionally causing harm to an animal (threats to harm, abuse) you are able to call the non-emergency police line for support on initiating an investigation under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Crisis Supports
24-hour CRISIS line providing immediate support. The Distress Line provides confidential, non-judgmental and short-term crisis intervention, emotional support and resources to people in crisis or distress. They also support family, friends and caregivers of people in crisis.
Children’s Services focuses on early intervention, child development and delivering supports and services to children, youth and families.
Food
Offers monthly low cost food baskets that members pre-order at the beginning of the month.
Serves those in need in Edmonton and surrounding areas who are encountering difficulties in their lives. A variety of support based resources available.
Some locations offer community meals, as well as Food Bank hamper support.
Offers Halal food hampers to all those in need, regardless of religious affiliation.
Food Not Bombs is an international organization dedicated to fighting hunger, poverty, and war.
Provides food hampers to assist in short-term situations. The hampers should last between five and seven days and will be built for the number of individuals in the household.

Composed of University of Alberta law students who can provide free legal information and assistance to the low income community in Edmonton.
Provides a range of resolution and court supports for people involved in legal disputes including information on the legal system, information on navigating the court system, and to help find solutions to legal issues.
An EPO protects you by ordering that your partner/parent/child not contact you, not come around you, and may remove your partner the Respondent from the family home.
There are different types of protection and restraining orders available to apply for depending on your situation.
Provides affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense.
The Law Society’s Lawyer Referral service helps you connect with a lawyer. After you provide information on your legal issue, you will be provided contact information for up to three lawyers that may help meet your needs.
The Edmonton Community Legal Centre provides free legal information and advice to low to moderate income people in the Edmonton area.
