Workshops for Anyone

Family Violence Prevention (Formerly Introduction to family violence)

What is it?

As the name suggests, this is an introductory workshop for those who want to learn the basics about family violence or would like a refresher. Participants will examine the types of violence (abuse), understand the role of power and barriers to support in family violence, and gain skills to better respond to disclosures from clients. We also share information on local community resources.

For Who?

This workshop is appropriate for any member of the general public interested in learning more.

Where is it Hosted?

These workshops are hosted virtually using Microsoft Teams.

How Long?

These workshops are often 1 1/2 hours in length, including a Q&A period.

How Much?

This workshop is completely free but specific dates may cost $10/person.

How Do I Register/Book?

Since this workshop is catered to service providers, our Education Specialist often hosts various dates for workshops throughout the month that attendees can ‘purchase’ tickets for using our online Eventbrite page. Check out our Eventbrite page here for upcoming dates.

Our Education Specialist can also host these workshops at companies/workplaces by request. Please inquire with Sarah for more details.

What is it?

A presentation to introduce you to and answer any questions you may have about The Today Centre. Whether it’s learning what we do, how we help clients, or whether you’d like to partner with us, this presentation is for you.

Where is it Hosted?

This presentation can be hosted virtually via Microsoft Teams or in-person.

This presentation is usually 45 minutes to 1 hour in length with Q&A.

Friends & Family support Workshop

What is it?

A community workshop on how to help a friend, identifying self-regulation as self-care, and covering any other topics related to supporting friends and family experiencing family violence. This workshop differs from the REALTalk Workshop in addressing disclosures and active family violence situations.

For Who?

A friend, family member, or coworker of an individual experiencing family violence.

Where is it Hosted?

This workshop is hosted virtually over Microsoft Teams.

How Long?

This workshop is 40 minutes in length.

How Much?

This workshop is free.

How Do I Register/Book?

This workshop is offered on a case by case basis as individuals request. Please inquire with our Education Specialist Sarah for more details and booking.


Workshops for Professionals

Family Violence in the Workplace

What is it?

An adapted workshop from the Make It Our Business program, which seeks to identify the signs of abuse and the impacts of family violence on the safety of the employee and the workplace. Participants will learn how to recognize family violence in the workplace, how to respond, and the impacts of family violence on the safety of the employee.

For Who?

This workshop is for companies or businesses interested in learning more on how to better support their employees experiencing family violence.

Where is it Hosted?

This workshop can be delivered virtually over Microsoft Teams or in-person.

How Long?

This workshop is one hour in length.

How Much?

This workshop is free but donations are strongly encouraged.

How Do I Register/Book?

This workshop is delivered on a case by case basis as companies/businesses are interested. Please inquire with our Education Specialist for booking and more details.

Co-Hosted Workshops

REALTalk: Break the Cycle of Violence

What is it?

A co-delivered workshop in partnership with Sagesse Calgary that focuses on empowering individuals to have every day, ordinary conversations on family violence in order to help support understanding and safe spaces for those experiencing family violence. Participants learn to recognize ‘the signs’ of abuse and its spectrum, empathize with disclosures by responding supportively, asking to inquire on how to support better and listening to create safe spaces.

For Who?

Any individual interested in learning more on how to support individuals experiencing family violence.

Where is it Hosted?

Virtually or in-person based on availability.

How Long?

These workshops are usually 1 1/2 hours in length including a Q&A period.

How Much?

This workshop is free.

How Do I Register/Book?

Workshops are hosted periodically as available. Participants can register by ‘purchasing’ tickets via CIAFV’s Eventbrite page found here.

Workshops can also be accommodated and hosted for companies/businesses interested. Please inquire with our Education Specialist.

Cut it Out

What is it?

A workshop co-delivered with a community partner focusing on identifying the signs of abuse and supporting clients experience family violence without endangering them or yourself.

For Who?

This workshop is catered for salon or spa professionals.

Where is it Hosted?

Workshop is hosted virtually or in-person at salon.

How Long?

This workshop is usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours in length.

How Do I Register/Book?

This workshop is offered on a case by case basis and can be booked anytime based on interest. Please inquire with our Education Specialist for booking.


Workshops for Service Providers

Family Violence Across the Lifespan

What is it?

An engaging training split into four weekly sessions that give a little more in-depth understanding of family violence. Participants will learn about the different types of abuse, the cycle of abuse, dispelling common myths surrounding family violence, understand the barriers faced by those experiencing family violence, about safety planning and risk mitigation, how to respond to disclosures, and the impacts of family violence on children, seniors, newcomers, and those in LGBTQ+ relationships.

For Who?

Catered for service providers in the Human Services, Healthcare, or Legal field.

Where is it Hosted?

These workshops are hosted virtually using Microsoft Teams.

How Long?

These workshops are typically 3 hours in length each session. Participants must attend all four sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

How Much?

This workshop is completely free.

How Do I Register/Book?
Our Education Specialist hosts two FVAL a year, usually occurring in the winter months and into the fall in September. Please inquire with our Education Specialist Sarah if there is an upcoming session.

Sr. High-Aged Youth

  • What is it?

    • This workshop is for senior-high aged youth and addresses developing essential skills for maintaining healthy relationships and promoting healthy relationships for themselves and others. Information learnt in this workshop aligns with the learning outcomes outlined in the Career and Life Management (CALM) portion of Alberta’s curriculum.

  • For Who?

    • This workshop is catered towards senior high-aged youth in grades 10-12.

  • Where is it Hosted?

    • Workshops can span 1 to 2 hours in length or longer as needed.

  • How Much?

    • This workshop is free.

  • How Do I Register/Book?

    • This workshop is offered on a case by case basis and booked as requested by teachers or school representatives. Please inquire with Sarah on booking and availability.

Jr. High-Aged Youth

  • What is it?

    • This workshop is catered towards junior high-aged youth in grades 7-9.

    • This workshop is free.

  • For Who?

    • This workshop is catered to age-appropriate learning and is offered for any youth grades 5 and above. This workshop is primarily for youth-serving organizations and agencies.

  • Where is it Hosted?

    • This workshop is hosted in-person.

  • How Long?

    • Workshops can span 1 to 2 hours in length or longer as needed.
