Self-Care Art Activity

Self Care Art project.png

Creating art can be a fun way to practice self-care by yourself or with your kids. Try this simple activity that can be made with any type of art supplies you may already have at home. We have also included some thought-provoking prompts to think about or discuss after you’ve completed the project.

Use this time to focus on self-reflection, fun, and maybe even bonding time - the goal is not to necessarily make a masterpiece. Explore who you are and maybe you’ll even learn something new about your friends/family if you do this project with them!

Project details:

  • Use any type of art materials!

    • For example: pencil crayons, markers, crayons, paint, collage materials… etc.

  • Use the body outline template provided or create your own by drawing a figure on a sheet of paper.

    • Option: You can make this a life-sized project by getting someone you trust to trace the outline of your body on a large sheet of paper.

  • Fill the body outline with symbols, words, and/or images that reflect who you are as a person.

    • For example: things that represent your culture, family, hobbies, and/or things you care about.

Journal/discussion prompts

Let go of value judgements, the act of subjectively evaluating something to be “good” or “bad”, while thinking or talking about your art project. We can try to find ways to examine our art without using value judgement terms. For example, instead of labelling our art as being “good” or “bad”, can we describe aspects of the process of creating art that we enjoyed or that we did not enjoy or found challenging.

  • Was there any feelings or thoughts that came up that you weren’t expecting?

  • Did you learn something new about someone in your life or yourself?

  • Was there anything that was challenging when reflecting on yourself?

  • Can you identify a few pieces in your art that influence who you are more so than other pieces?

Discussion Prompts for kids

Try to not make assumptions about your child's art, if you don’t know what something is ask them!

Ask your child:

  • How did doing this activity make you feel?

  • Was anything fun? Difficult?

  • Do you have a favourite part? A least favourite part? Why do you feel this way?
