The Today Centre exists because of people and organizations like you who want to help others live a safe and healthy life free from family violence. The support you provide gives us the ability to empower our clients and provide them with what they require, based on their own unique needs.

Some of the ways you can take action for the well-being of victims of family violence include:

  • Making a financial gift to our areas of most need

  • Donate new and/or unused gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants, transportation (LRT, bus, taxi, Uber), recreational activities and more

  • Donating unused and unopened goods such as hygiene items, diapers, undergarments (men, women, tweens, children), and more

  • Offering gifts of product and service items such as new door locks (and the labour to install), moving assistance, home repairs and more

  • Hosting a fundraising and awareness event for The Today Centre

Volunteering your precious time, energy and passion to one of our committees for help with special events, administrative duties, education assistance and by joining our Board of Directors

By choosing to be involved with The Today Centre, know that what you do today will positively impact someone else’s tomorrow.

Thank you for thinking of donating goods and/or service(s) and/or gift cards to The Today Centre! We truly appreciate it and value your thoughtfulness and generosity. Below are lists of goods, services and gift cards we can always use. For anything else, contact us for details.

  • Items our clients may require can vary depending on the time of year and their unique needs and circumstances. Other than the staple items listed below, we never know what our clients will need at any given time in their journey.

In addition, as storage space is limited, we are cautious not to take in what we cannot handle. For this reason, please contact us first if you would like to make a donation of goods. Through our conversation we can determine what works best for our clients.

For items we are not able to take in, we can provide you with a comprehensive list of our partner agencies who may be able to accept your donation.

Here are some items we can always pass along to our clients:

    • Disinfecting wipes – preferably unscented

    • Disinfecting spray – preferably unscented

  • Many of our clients suddenly find themselves in a position of financial insecurity. This can be due to several factors, however, most of the time, it is due to financial abuse.

Financial abuse refers to the controlling of funds and/or property through force, fraud, manipulation, trickery, and/or theft. Financial abuse occurs when a single person controls all the financial resources (money, property, credit) within a relationship and uses this power as a means to exert control over their partner. People experiencing financial abuse might not be “allowed” by their partners to seek employment, open their own bank accounts, own property or contribute in the making of financial decisions.

This is why a gift of an in-kind service can go a long way in helping a victim find some peace of mind.

Below is a list of some types of in-kind services our clients may find themselves needing but are unable to afford. If you have a service you think our clients can use, please contact us.

Waiving the costs or providing a substantial discount on product, labour, installation and more for the following:

    • Moving services – packing, loading, transporting, unpacking, etc.

    • Lock services – changing exterior house locks

    • Alarm services – installing or changing home and vehicle alarm codes

    • Realtor services – listing property, commission fees, staging, legal fees, etc.

    • Rental assistance services – free or discounted rental fees, etc.

    • Legal services – court fees, restraining order fees, lawyer fees, etc.

    • Plumbing services – product, installation, replacement, labour costs, etc.

    • Electrical services – assessment, installation, product, labour, etc.

    • Home maintenance services – internal and external assistance

      • Ex. fixing a broken door, hanging curtain rods and curtains/blinds, mowing the lawn, fixing a fence, etc

  • Having a gift card to grocery shop, pay for gas, install a new door lock or just escape for a few hours at the movie theater can make all the difference in the world to a client (and their children).

Imagine, having to choose between buying diapers, milk, or winter boots for yourself and/or your kids. For our clients, this is more often than not their reality. That is why a donation of a gift card to The Today Centre means so much – because with a gift card, our clients can purchase what they need when they need it without the worry of having to choose between one item or another.

Whether you have new gift cards, or un-used ones, consider bringing them to The Today Centre so we can pass them along to our clients.

Here are the types of gift cards you can donate to help our clients:

    • Grocery stores like Superstore, Sobeys, Save On Foods, No Frills, FreshCo, etc.

    • Big box stores like Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, IKEA, etc.

    • Family restaurants and fast food establishments

    • Entertainment outlets like movie theatres (with treats, of course), waterparks, amusement parks, bowling, recreation/swimming venues, etc.

    • Gas/Diesel stations

    • Mechanical stations for tire repair, spring tune-ups, oil changes, etc.

    • Repair/handy person organizations like Handyman Connection, etc.

    • Economical box stores like Dollarama, Dollar Tree, Giant Tiger, etc.

    Please Note:

    • Be sure to indicate the dollar value of each gift card

    • To receive a tax receipt, the original receipt must be included in the gift card donation.

    • Mail or drop off a gift card in-person to: The Today Centre 17724 – 102 Ave NW, Westgate Business Park, Edmonton, AB T5S 1H5

Host a Fundraiser

Planning and implementing an event or activity to raise funds for The Today Centre is something we like to call a ‘Third-Party Event’. A third-party event/activity is hosted by individual(s), community groups, corporations, churches, religious organizations, schools and more.

Third-party events/activities helps create awareness of the issue of family violence while raising much-needed funds to help support The Today Centre. Our programs, services and resources are not only provided to victims of family violence, but also include the educational workshops and resources given to businesses, groups, individuals and members of the community who want to learn more about how they can help.

Questions?
Please contact Linda Kelly, Community Engagement Specialist at 780-392-3262 or linda.kelly@thetodaycentre.ca

  • Hosting a third-party event is one of the best ways to raise money and bring people together to learn about an important cause like family violence and the impact it has on all of us. A few ideas of third-party events/activities include hosting a gala, having a garage sale, running a marathon, collecting pop cans, and the list goes on and on!

The next time you are planning an activity or event, consider making it a third-party event and raise some money for a great cause. You will be helping victims of family violence, spreading awareness of the issue itself and educating yourself and others on the subject, and most importantly – you’ll be having fun doing it!

The Today Centre will do all we can to help make your third party a success! When possible, we will help by posting your event to our social media platforms, attending and speaking at the event, helping with set-up/take down, etc.

    How we can help you:

    1. Have a conversation with you and offer suggestions and fundraising ideas you can consider doing.

    2. Offer advice on how to plan your fundraising event/activity.

    3. Provide approval in writing for the go-ahead of your fundraiser.

    4. Offer our logo and brand guidelines for use in your digital, print and social media platforms for advertising purposes. Note: Any use of The Today Centre name and logo appearing in public in any manner must have the written and expressed approval from The Today Centre.

    5. Provide collateral and promotional materials on request (limited quantities may apply).

    6. Provide a letter of support on our letterhead to show legitimacy of our partnership that can be used when requesting sponsorship and/or auction items.

    7. When possible, provide a staff member to attend the event and provide support including public speaking on behalf of The Today Centre, setting up a table of information on The Today Centre, greeting guests, assisting at the event where necessary, etc.

    8. Help promote the fundraiser on all our digital and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

    9. Issue tax receipts as per the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules and guidelines

What we are not able to do to help:

    1. We cannot apply for permits, licenses or any kind of insurance on your behalf.

    2. We cannot give you our registered AGLC number to use – you must contact AGLC yourself and apply for your own.

    3. Assume responsibility to the event organizer(s) or the fundraising event’s legal, financial, or medical aspects prior to the event, during the event or post event.

    4. Provide any amount of financial support for any costs incurred by the event organizer(s) and/or the fundraising event itself including (but not limited to) administrative, venue, food, beverage, event management, damage to property, covering costs, fixed, variable or miscellaneous costs and expenses.

    5. Provide The Today Centre volunteers to assist with any aspect of the event.

    6. Provide staff, donor, volunteer, sponsor, guest/participant, sponsor names (individuals and corporate names), or contact information in any form.

    7. Assist with or solicit for sponsorship accrual including financial, and/or in-kind goods and/or services.

    8. Provide prizes, awards, certificates, auction items (live or silent), auction bidding tools, etc.

We will work collaboratively with any individual or group who is interested in organizing a third-party fundraising event. We are very thankful to our supporters who take the time to organize these fundraising initiatives for us and want to see it succeed as much as you do!

    Please Note:

    • The Today Centre has no plausible responsibility to the event or activity

    • Staff involvement may be limited due to lack of human resources and time we have available

Be an Ally

In addition to donating to organizations like The Today Centre that are working directly with those experiencing and facing violence at home, prioritize spending time educating yourself on this devastating issue and become an ally in our efforts to help those who need our support.

You can start this journey by visiting our resources page where we host a variety of info-graphics and videos about family violence and its impact on those experiencing it, their loved ones and society as a whole. In addition, you can request a workshop from our Family Violence Education Specialist to further your understanding of family violence in our community.

Learn through your already innate compassion, empathy and understanding, how you can be of support to family members, neighbours, friends, and co-workers who may be struggling with family violence and/or to those who crave more information on how they can help someone who may be suffering.
